in future 仅存在于英式英语，相当于 from now，即“从现在开始”。

In future, staff must wear identity badges at all times.
从今以后，员工必须一直佩戴身份证章。

in the future 指的是 at some time in the future，即“未来的某个时间点”。

I believe that in the future all our clothes will be made of plastic.
因为“衣服全部由塑料制成”这件事发生在遥远的未来，而不是“从现在开始”。

不过in future这一用法只有英式英语里面才有，美式英语里面无论表示“从今以后”还是遥远的未来，用的都是in the future，不过这不影响我们上面的结论。

从上面也开始看出，冠词的使用非常复杂。有时候多一个冠词少一个冠词就会影响句子意思，还要考虑英式英语和美式英语的差别。

再举个例子，“弹吉他”应该说play guitar还是play the guitar?
其实两者都是可以的，英式英语里面用play the guitar，而美式英语经常会出现play guitar
除了吉他之外，其他乐器也遵循这个规律，即在英式英语中要说 play the piano/violin/flute etc. 而在美式英语中有时候the会省略。
